Located on the busy street of Magazine Road, St Giles Wembley Penang is easily the tallest building on that road (if you do not count The Komtar shopping mall), dwarfing the rest of the buildings surrounding it. To it’s opposite is another hotel, which is much shorter as compared with The Wembley.
We drove to this hotel by following the Google Maps. It was easy to find as Magazine Road was a busy street and it was located opposite of The Komtar Shopping Mall and 1st Avenue shopping mall. We parked our car at level 2 and proceeded to the reception at ground floor. There was no queue when we reached the reception. The check in procedure was quick and smooth. The staff had noticed that I requested for interconnecting rooms and he accommodated my request.
Take note that the hotel requested a city tax imposed by the local government, therefore we had to pay an extra RM 12 for two rooms. On top of that, a deposit of RM 400 was requested too. But this could be charged to your credit card and would be refunded to you once you check out the hotel.
For anyone who self-drive in Penang, you can get a multiple entries parking coupon from the hotel staff upon request.
Next to the reception, there was some snacks provided to the hotel guests, for example candy floss, popcorns, juice and water. Free of charged.
Our rooms were on the 23rd floor, a non-smoking floor. Each rooms were given two card keys. We had two superior rooms, one came with a king size bed and another with two single beds. The rooms were considered small but everything that we needed was inside the rooms.
Our rooms had the view of Magazine Road. We could see some parts of Penang from the rooms because this hotel was one of the tallest building in that area.
The beds and pillows were comfortable. The air conditioner was working well. Toilet amenities were provided such as shampoo, body shower, conditioner, lotion, comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, cotton buds and shaver. Toilet had standing shower and the water pressure was strong. Inside the wardrobe was a safe, two robes, ironing board, room slippers. At the side of the wardrobe was a pull out drawer with cups, beverages and kettle for making hot drinks. Complimentary mineral water bottles were provided. TV had some satellite channels to watch during relax time. Wifi speed was fast. Rooms were quiet but I did occasionally hear some honking or car noise during the night. The noise was tolerable. The furniture might look a bit dated because of some scratches on the woods panel on the wardrobes. Overall, the rooms were cozy and comfortable.
We did not have breakfast at the hotel restaurant so no comment on that. We did check out the swimming pool and gym. The swimming pool and gym were average in size. It was lunch time when we were at the pool and gym, so they were unoccupied. They were well-maintained and clean.
The hotel location is good too. Shopping malls such as 1st Avenue, Prangin Mall and The Komtar are within walking distance. Just before the hotel, there is a very famous hawker stall called Tang Yen, selling glutinous riceballs in ginger soup. The stall opens at night after 7pm. We had tried them and they were really delicious, especially when my kids too like to eat them (even though they do not drink ginger soup). So if you decided to stay in this hotel, make sure to give this a try. But beware that the queue at this stall can be very long sometimes. So be patient!
After two nights stay, we check out of the hotel. Procedure was quick and swift. Need to exchange the multiple entries parking coupon for a single entry coupon. My kids made use of the free juice at the reception again before heading to the airport. The hotel stay was very pleasant and value for money.
